Day V

Soney | March 20th, 2009

Today started off in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. I was surprised by how large the city was tall skyscrapers and businesses were numerous in the downtown area. The first stop of the day was the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. The tour was very interesting and explained how Birmingham was just as important as New Orleans in the development of jazz music. Next, we were off to Sixteenth Street Baptist the location of a tragic bombing where four young girls lost their lives. The church was very nice on the inside and prided itself on the fact that the past’s violent acts could deface the church but not destroy it entirely. After the church we went to the Civil Rights Institute and strolled around Freedom Park. The weather was beautiful that day which added to the elegance of the park. The park was full of statues depicting scenes from the Civil Rights era.
